Shopping for Lingerie following cancer related breast surgery can be a very different experience than women are used to.
There really is so much more to consider when purchasing lingerie, than there was before surgery. Not only has the size and shape of the breasts been significantly altered, but the emotional turmoil that can accompany lingerie shopping, now that your body is forever changed, can be overwhelming, especially in the early days following treatment.
Breast Friends York members have experienced this themselves. As a result of our varied experiences, we now offer regular post surgery lingerie evenings to local women. The events are always run by trained and experienced bra fitters, who have been specifically trained in bra fitting ladies who have undergone cancer related surgery.
Trained bra fitters understand the emotional distress that can sometimes be experienced by their customers and can offer time, gentle support and reassurances. They understand the terminology often used, eliminating the need for long repetitive explanations. They understand how each type of surgery changes the body, where scars can cause discomfort and how bras fit differently following different kinds of surgery.
We currently have 2 different organisations providing lingerie evenings to us on a rolling programme, 3 or 4 times a year. The evenings are social events, open to our members and non members alike, where, our usual tea and cakes can be enjoyed. Ladies are free to browse through the stock available and we encourage trying on and having a bra fitting. All of this happens in a relaxed environment, with no pressure and whilst surrounded by women who truly do understand. The events are free and open to anyone who has had a breast cancer diagnosis at any point in the past.
Items available to purchase include, pocketed bras, protheses, non pocketed bras, some matching underwear, sleep wear and swimwear. The prices of products vary depending on the company but post surgery lingerie is always VAT exempt.
